Project Description
The SE 1st Street Gas Transmission Main Replacement was essential to maintaining reliable gas service in Vancouver, WA, during the City of Vancouver’s major SE 1st Street improvement project. The roadway reconstruction, which involved lowering the road by 30 feet and installing new utilities, including water, sewer, stormwater, and significant power infrastructure, required NW Natural’s existing gas lines to be lowered by 30 feet and fully realigned to prevent conflicts and ensure safety. Our firm partnered with the City of Vancouver to design a new gas pipeline that was carefully aligned to function effectively and safely, while accommodating the placement of new utility systems.
To reduce community impact, the gas pipeline installation was scheduled during the warmer months when demand for natural gas is lower. This limited the construction window to just six months. A detailed staging plan allowed the new pipeline to be installed immediately after the road was cut to grade and before other utilities were added. Additional designs included a new distribution pressure pipeline and a regulator station to serve the area’s growing commercial needs.
This project preserved vital gas service during a complex infrastructure overhaul and enabled future community growth by supporting utility expansion. The successful collaboration helped ensure long-term reliability and development potential for the community.
